From the page to the stage!

Bridges are built to be crossed!

That’s a direct line from one of my 18 poems in the collaboration between Reclaim Artist Collective and Sankofa African American Theatre Company, Bridge {the Gap.} The staged reading was written by myself and Sharia Benn, founder of Sankofa. On September 14th and 15th, the Capital BlueCross Theatre at Central Penn College hosted the event which attracted nearly 200 people.

Although I originally thought I’d sit back and watch the show with the audience, I decided to join the cast and give the ‘grande finale’ performance of “American Terror” to close the show.

This poem reminds us of the history of lynching, and our government’s denial of that crisis. It also makes us think of the sad state we are in with police brutality that often goes unaddressed.

After several weeks of emotionally trying rehearsals, we all bonded and came together to produce something powerful in the end. I was honored to be a part of it. Check out some of the pictures from the show, courtesy of Greg Colburn.
